Harvey Weinstein indicted by New York grand jury on new charges ahead of November retrial

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced former Hollywood producer, has been indicted on new charges by a New York grand jury, according to NBC News. The specific charges remain under seal, and prosecutors have yet to disclose further details. Weinstein, 72, who recently underwent heart surgery, was not present in court for the announcement.

Earlier in September, NBC reported that a grand jury was convened to hear testimony from women who came forward with new accusations against Weinstein. These allegations follow Weinstein’s previous conviction in 2020, where he was sentenced to 23 years for third-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act. However, that conviction was overturned in April 2024 due to a ruling that deemed testimony from women not directly involved in the case was inappropriately allowed.

New York prosecutors had already expressed their intention to recharge Weinstein for the original crimes and potentially bring new charges. The former film producer also faces a 16-year sentence from a 2022 conviction in Los Angeles for sexual assault and rape. Weinstein continues to deny all allegations, asserting that the encounters were consensual.

Weinstein will remain in custody until his November retrial, although it is unclear if the new and original charges will be tried simultaneously.
