Salman Ali Agha took a stunning catch to dismiss Matthew Breetzke during the critical ODI Tri-Series match between Pakistan and South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi on February 12. Agha’s exceptional athleticism turned out to be the highlight of the match, with the catch being hailed as one of his best.
Breetzke, who had been in excellent form, was looking dangerous when Agha’s brilliance ended his innings.
This moment came on the first delivery of the 39th over, as Khushdil Shah bowled a flighted delivery outside off. Breetzke attempted to drive the ball to the cover region, but Agha, leaping to his right, stretched out one hand to complete a magnificent catch mid-air.
This catch was just one of several stellar efforts from Agha, who had already left fans in awe earlier in the 8th over.
On that occasion, Shaheen Shah Afridi’s delivery got the outside edge of Tony de Zorzi’s bat, and the ball flew towards second slip. Agha reacted quickly, diving to his right to complete another fine catch, ending a 51-run opening partnership.
South Africa, batting first, posted an imposing 352/5 in their 50 overs. Temba Bavuma anchored the innings with a composed 82 off 96 balls, while Breetzke contributed a solid 83 off 84.
However, Heinrich Klaasen’s blistering 87 off just 56 balls, including 11 fours and 3 sixes, was the game-changer. Kyle Verreynne (44 off 32) also made a valuable contribution as South Africa reached a daunting total.
Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the South African onslaught, with Shaheen Afridi (2/66), Khushdil Shah (1/39), and Naseem Shah (1/68) providing the only breakthroughs. Abrar Ahmed (0/63) and Mohammad Hasnain (0/72) had tough outings, failing to pick up wickets.
Now, Pakistan faces a formidable task chasing down 353 to secure a spot in the Tri-Series final against New Zealand.
